Army photographer Alexander Roberts crawled under enemy fire to record the death of War photographer Ernie Pyle . Today 5 February 2008 is believed to be the first publication of that image , rare in print , and the negative said to have been destroyed .

AP reports today that in 1945 Pyle explained why he focused on the GI's war rather than grand stradegy .

" I haven't written about the Big Picture because I don't know anything about it . "
