James Welch ,

2nd Lieutenant , Company " G " , 8th Vermont Infantry .

  Service late 1861 ~ early 1865 .

 Sergent , promoted 2nd Lieutenant mid 1863 .
Taken prisoner at Bootie Station , Louisiana September 4th 1862 .
Held at Camp Pratt , Louisiana , during which time he contracted
erysipelas . He was treated by his tent mate with medicine obtained
from a Confederate surgeon .
Paroled November 1st , and exchanged January 10th 1863 .
Wounded on the skirmish line commanding his company
at Cedar Creek October 18th 1864 . The wound was severe ,
a bullet passing through his left leg below the knee .
Welch received an Invalid Pension in 1865 , and it was increased
in 1869 in response to the condition of the wound .

James Welch died at Randolph , Vermont of cancer September 2nd 1890 .
Abbie M . Welch , his wife died January 28th 1895 .
They were married at Randolph in 1849 .
