Second portion of manuscript outlines Greens service . John W . Green was born at Darien , Georgia 14 November 1834 . He entered rail road service in 1857 . In 1861 he was Chief Engineer for the Shreveport & Texas line . Civil War service as Private , Adjutant of Battalion , Lieutenant , Captain , and Major of engineer troops . He served with General Hardee and later with General Joe Johnston . Following the War , and as a citizen Green continued in railroading . He has been a chief engineer , superintendent , and beginning in 1881 , general manager of the Georgia Railroad . - National Encyclopedia of American Biography 1906 Currency shows hard use . There are two strips of tape ~ an older repair that reinforces .
